SGW Annual Events
NewtonSERVES
- A day of community service when volunteers of all ages join together for projects throughout the city.
- SGW piloted a Business Recycling Project for business to recycle paper and cardboard in 2008, 2009 and 2010 in Newton villages!
EnviroJam: Rock to reduce your carbon footprint!
- A carbon neutral event featuring musical acts by teachers and students at Newton North. Over $3,500 was raised and matched by Mass Energy Consumers Alliance and the Commonwealth of Massachussetts for renewal energy development in Newton.
Newton Farmers Market July thru October
- We may not have tasty treats to eat at our stand but we have live entertainment, giant caterpillars of all colors and the magic energy bikeā¦plus the Caterpillar Club!
Caterpillar Club
Environmental fun for children 10 and under! Tell us how you are a friend to the environment!
- Print out the caterpillar fun page (download pdf) on recycled paper.
- Write your name and name your green caterpillar.
- In each section of the caterpillar, write down a good thing you did this week to help the environment OR a green tip to teach someone else learn how to be green!
EnviroArt Contest
- Each Spring we invite all Newton students to enter this contest and show Newton how to go green. The first contest in 2007 included essays only, the art contest was added in 2008, and in 2010 it became the art contest only. Including the 2011 contest, over 500 kids citywide have participated.
- The contest coordinators include high school students from both Newton North and Newton South.
- Our contest judges are Newton art teacher and artists.

Environmental Speaker Series Student Presentations
- Each year we are asked to present a program by students as part of this monthly series.
- Our speakers include presentations by:
- Elementary Schools (Countryside 2009, Burr 2010)
- Middle Schools (F.A. Day 2010)
- High Schools (Newton North 2009, 2010, Newton South 2010)
- Students for a Greener World (every year!)
Newton Cultural Center
- Each year we are part of the Newton Cultural Center's anniversary festivities in the fall.
- We have lots of fun things including the giant chess set, recycled obstacle course, magic recycled box workshop, magic energy bike and "How do you go green in 3, 4 or 5 words?"
