Energy Conservation Contest 2008
Newton's energy consumption continues to climb in spite of increased awareness of the harm caused by CO2 emissions and global warming. The purpose of the Energy Conservation Essay and Art Contest
is to increase awareness of the issue among Newton residents and to encourage them to choose more energy efficient products and to waste less energy.
General Rules
- Eligibility: The contest is open to all students in grades K-12 who either live or attend school in Newton.
- Entries must be received or postmarked no later than March 30, 2008.
- All entries will be judged by a panel of judges selected by the Green Decade Coalition/Newton.
- Entries will be judged using a blind judging process — judges will not know the name of the entrant.
- There are FOUR LEVELS:
- K-2 (Elementary School)
- 3-5 (Elementary School)
- 6-8 (Middle School)
- 9-12 (High School)
- Each level will be judged separately.
- On-line pre-registration is strongly encouraged

Key points:
- All THREE QUESTIONS must be addressed in your essay. The questions are diffierent for each level and are given below.
- The SCORING is WEIGHTED by question.
- Question 1 = 20%
- Question 2. = 35%
- Question 3. = 45%

Elementary School Essay:
500 words maximum Questions
- What are you and your family doing now to conserve energy? (20%)
- What new idea for conserving energy could you try in the next 12 months and why? (35%)
- How could you share what you do with your friends or other people so they conserve energy? (45%)

Middle School Essay:
1000 words maximum Questions
- What are you and your family doing now to conserve energy?
- What new ways of energy conservation could you take in the next 12 months and why?
- How could you make a difference in energy conservation in other areas of your life: friends, family, school, clubs or other organizations?

High School Essay:
1500 words maximum Questions
- What are you and your family doing now to conserve energy?
- What new actions to conserve energy will you take in the next 12 months and why?
- How can you effect change in energy conservation in your sphere of influence: friends, family, school, clubs or other organizations?

Guidelines for submission:
- Essays may be emailed as a Microsoft Word attachment to energycongtest@greendecade.org or submitted in hard copy.
- Include a separate cover page with the following information:
- Your name
- Your entry number (provided by us when you register)
- Your age
- The name of your school
- Your grade
- Title of essay
- Entry number (provided when you register) must be included on every page, including the cover page.
- Your name should be on the cover page only!
- Essays must be received or postmarked no later than March 30, 2008.

Key points:
- Art must be 2 dimensional.
- Maximum size is 18 in. x 24 in.
- All media (including photographs) are acceptable.
- Use of recycled materials is encouraged.
- Art must be your original work.

Express Yourself — Be Creative!
Express what you have already done . . . and what you can do next! Show how you love the earth and want to conserve its resources by using your creativity. Challenge yourself creatively
and artistically by reflecting on the environment and what you can do to help save it.

Criteria for Artwork
All artwork wil be judged on the following:
- Originality/unique vision
- Use of materials
- Effective communication of message
- Composition, use of color, line and other elements of art
- Execution/craftsmanship

Public Display of Artwork
All artwork submitted to the contest will be displayed at the awards ceremony in April.
We intend to display selected artwork at several locations around the city, such as the Newton Free Library and City Hall.

Guidelines for submission:
- Entries may be submitted via mail or at a designated drop-off location.
- Mail to:

- Include the contest label with the following information:
- Your name
- Your entry number (provided by us when you register)
- Your age
- The name of your school
- Your grade
- Title of Artwork
- Brief Description of Artwork
- Label should be attached to the back of the artwork.
- Do not include your name on the front of the artwork
- Artwork will be returned to the artists after the contest is over.
- Essays must be received or postmarked no later than March 30, 2008.
