  RENEWABLE ENERGY

Renewable Energy Sources include the natural resources that are free to us: sun, wind, water.

  • Solar Homes Tour:  We coordinate local solar homes tour in conjunction with the National Solar Homes Tour, usually in October. Occasional other tours as well. Details are posted as the event nears. It's fun!
  • Solar Shares: We raised funds for one 2 kW PV installation on the Newton Community Services Center (NCSC) in West Newton.  It was developed in partnership with NCSC.  Money raised through the solar homes tour and contributions goes to a maintenance fund for the panels, and future projects.
  • Solar Baseline:  In 2000, we counted 113 panels on rooftops on Newton homes. Of 55 responding to our survey, about 70% were operational (all solar hot water).  From this project, we partnered with Newton SUNERGY (now Renewable Resources) to promote solar energy in Newton via the Million Solar Roofs Initiative.  At least a dozen new solar energy systems have been installed since the initial baseline count.
  • Wind Power:  We support wind energy in general, and after careful evaluation of the USACE impact statement, the Board of Green Decade voted (11/04) to endorse the Cape Wind project in Nantucket Sound.
  • USDOE Award: In August 2004, the Green Decade was recognized as the US Department of Energy's Million Solar Roofs Initiative "Gauntlet Award Winner of 2004" for our work to support solar energy.
