| 3. "DEEP ENERGY RETROFITS IN THE REAL WORLD" WITH PAUL ELDRENKAMP |
Thursday, Sept. 24 7:00 pm Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium 330 Homer St., Newton Center Free to the public
The Obama administration has set a goal of 80% greenhouse gas emissions (from 1990 levels)) by 2050. The choices that homeowners make in the coming years with regard to renovations, repairs, and upgrades will determine whether our existing housing stock becomes part of the solution for 2050 -- or continues to be a big part of the problem.
Learn how to calculate a quick but useful energy rating "score" for your home, and know how you compare with their neighbors. Find out what those "scores" will need to be for us to be able to reach the 2050 greenhouse gas emissions goal Get in on the ground level of a range of initiatives in Newton to increase not only our awareness of where we need to go with our houses but our collective ability to get there.
The Green Decades Paul Eldrenkamp will be the guest speaker. For more information on this special program, visit Upcoming Events on the Green Decade Website.

| 4. NEWTON ECOTEAMS & COOL MASS: 25% by 25% by 2012! |
Goal: to reduce household carbon footprints of 25% of Newton households by 25% by 2012.
Join the Newton EcoTeam project -- become part of "Cool Mass", an eleven-community initiative of MCAN (Massachusetts Climate Action Network)! Since approximately 40% of Newton's total carbon footprint is produced by the residential sector, we can make a significant contribution to the city's carbon reduction goals while providing real cost savings for participants.
EcoTeams, groups of 5-8 people from different households, learn how to make lifestyle choices and home improvements that reduce their carbon footprint. Each change they make provides a carbon reduction that is quantified and credited toward a total reduction for the city. These teams typically meet in each other's homes, four times over the course of a month or so.
Major cultural, political, social and religious groups and leading citizens throughout Newton are working with the Green Decade to help form EcoTeams through their organizations. Find out more or join a Newton EcoTeam! Contact co-chairs Bonnie Glickman or Jay Walter. |
