5. INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CLIMATE ACTION: NEWTON BIKE RIDE!
|
Saturday, October 24 11:00 am 10:45 am: Meet at City Hall War Memorial Circle
Inspired by Bill McKibben's Network 350, communities around the world, including Newton, will be uniting in an effort to urge our world leaders to promote policy that will lead to a healthier and more sustainable planet. 350.org refers to 350 parts per million, the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere.
Green Decade Newton is partnering with Bike Newton for a guided group bike ride along the Commonwealth Ave Carriage Lane to Auburndale Cove. We will be demonstrating our solidarity with thousands of grassroots organizations throughout the world simultaneously engaging in actions to express their commitment to seeking local solutions to the climate crisis.
Meet in the War Memorial Circle at City Hall at 10:45 am -- we will leave promptly at 11:00 am for Auburndale Cove for a 7 mile round-trip ride, which will be slowly paced. (Map) All riders must wear a helmet, have a bike in good working order, and children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. When we reach the Cove, we will take a group photo that will be posted on the 350.org website. More information: www.greendecade.org and www.bikenewton.org (click on NEWS).

| 6. NEWTON ECOTEAMS & COOL MASS: NEWTON IS IN! |
Our goal: to reduce household carbon footprints of 25% of Newton households by 25% by 2012.
September 16th's Newton EcoTeam Project Kick-Off brought together major Newton cultural, political, social and religious groups and leading citizens who are working with the Green Decade to help form EcoTeams through their organizations. Newton is one of 11 communities participating in "Cool Mass" -- a ground-breaking new program that brings the strength and determination of Massachusetts residents to the fight against global warming.
Households across the Commonwealth are acting boldly to reduce their carbon footprints, by forming EcoTeams in their communities. Newton is one of the first 11 communities to join the Cool Mass Campaign, along with Boston, Brookline, Dedham, Milton, Newton, Braintree, Cohasset, Hingham, Hull, Plymouth, and Winchester. MCAN (Massachusetts Climate Action Network) and Empowerment Institute will be working with representatives from all these communities over the next three years to enable them to reduce carbon footprints by 25% in up to 85% of households.
Find out more and join a Newton EcoTeam -- groups are already in place with more joining weekly! Visit www.newtonecoteams.org and contact co-chairs Bonnie Glickman at bglickman@mindspring.com or Jay Walter at Entasis@rcn.com.
