1.OCTOBER 7:  7th ANNUAL SOLAR HOMES TOUR
Sunday, October 7, 12:00-4:00 pm
Registration 11:30 am
Newton Community Service Center
492 Waltham St., West Newton
$15  advance, $18 at the door

Join Green Decade's 7th Annual Solar Homes Tour, and see the science in action. We'll visit four homes that are tapping the sun's energy instead of relying on harmful (and disappearing) fossil fuels.  We'll also see the solar systems on the Newton Community Services Center and Newton South High School.  Learn about photovoltaic (PV) electricity panels and solar water heating systems. This is a great introduction for homeowners looking to explore eco-friendly energy options or for anyone who wants to be "in the know" about the latest science and technology. We'll meet at the Newton Community Service Center (492 Waltham St., West Newton); proceeds will help support upkeep of their solar panels.

Space is limited, advance registration recommended.  Register online at www.greendecade.org/events or send your  tax-deductible check  made out to GDC/N and mail to Green Decade Coalition/Newton, PO Box 590242, Newton, MA 02465. For additional information:  www.greendecade.org or 617-965-1995.

3.  OCTOBER ENVIRONMENTAL SHOW:  "HOME GROWN: NEWTON ANGINO COMMUNITY FARM", WITH GREG MASLOWE
Through October
Host:  Cris Criscitiello
Guests:  Greg Maslowe, Newton Angino Community Farm

TIn case you were not able to attend this past spring's Newton Conservators Annual Dinner,  you will be able to watch the presentation by keynote speaker Greg Maslowe on the October  Environmental Show entitled "Home Grown".  His topic is the backyard garden, with
slides of back yards in Newton that have optimized their growing areas and produce bountiful crops. . He noted that a large space is not required for productive use, but there needs to be judicious use of space, including the choice of trees and shrubs. As an example, why not choose a pear tree that not only blooms but that also produces fruit for human use, instead of a dogwood that may be pretty but, for us, less edible?

More information about the October program is available at greendecade.org/environmentTV.
The Environment Show is broadcast on the NewTV Blue channel (Comcast Chan. 10, RCN Chan. 15, Verizon Chan. 34):
Mondays      3:00 p.m.
Tuesdays      1:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.
Thursdays:    12:00, 4:00 and 7:30 p.m.

Only one month left for you to join us at the 28th Newton Farmers Market! The  Green Decade has our information and resource table under the red  tent at both locations -- volunteers of all ages are welcome to join  us, as always.  This year we are featuring the popular "Energy  Bike" which demonstrates the difference in energy required to light up the old-style light bulbs vs the energy-efficient CFL bulbs.  Our friends from the Angino Farm are also at both markets this year, so stop by to see us all!

The Newton Farmers Markets are held weekly from July through October.  If you'd like to volunteer for a couple of hours  at either location, please contact Margaret Ford, Community Outreach  Coordinator, at margford@yahoo.com or 617-964-0606.
