The Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead
Paul Eldrenkamp, Instructor

nsulating your home properly is one of the fastest and most cost-effective ways to minimize your energy waste and maximize your energy dollars. And despite what you may have heard, it is possible to weatherize your older home without compromising its historical character. This workshop will include hands-on demonstration of various energy-saving tools, such as blower doors and infrared cameras. We'll also take an objective look at the different products and techniques for increasing energy efficiency. Learn how you can stay warm this winter, save money, and reduce your ecological footprint at the same time. The workshop will be held at The Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead (527 Washington St., Newton); proceeds will go to The Green Decade/Newton and Historic Newton (Newton Historical Society).

Register on-line or mail a check with your name, phone number and email address to GD/N, PO Box 590242, Newton, MA 02459-0003. For more information call 617-965 1995 or email contact@greendecade.org.

3. NEWTON ECOTEAMS & COOL MASS: NEWTON IS IN!
Our goal: to reduce household carbon footprints of 25% of Newton households by 25% by 2012.

Newton is one of 11 communities participating in "Cool Mass" -- a ground-breaking new program that brings the strength and determination of Massachusetts residents to the fight against global warming.

Households across the Commonwealth are acting boldly to reduce their carbon footprints, by forming EcoTeams in their communities. Newton is one of the first 11 communities to join the Cool Mass Campaign, along with Boston, Brookline, Dedham, Milton, Newton, Braintree, Cohasset, Hingham, Hull, Plymouth, and Winchester.  MCAN (Massachusetts Climate Action Network) and Empowerment Institute will be working with representatives from all these communities over the next three years to enable them to reduce carbon footprints by 25% in up to 85% of households.

Find out more and join a Newton EcoTeam -- groups are already in place with more joining weekly! Visit www.newtonecoteams.org and contact co-chairs Bonnie Glickman at bglickman@mindspring.com or Jay Walter at Entasis@rcn.com.

A higher quality of life at a lower cost of living-what could be better? David Del Porto and his wife, Elva, have spent 25 years turning this vision into a reality. Today, their Newton Centre home is a model of sustainable design. You'll tour their "Urban Ark," and discover how they've integrated space heat, food production, air purification, and wastewater treatment within an amazing two-story greenhouse. They'll share the successes and failures of their quest for green living, and show you how to invest your time and money to get the most benefit from the least effort. And with rising fuel and water prices and dwindling resources, there's no time like the present to learn methods that can provide environmental and economic security for you and your family. Directions to the meeting point will be provided to registrants; proceeds will go to The Green Decade/Newton.
