May 1-15 in the Rotunda at City Hall 1000 Commonwealth Avenue, Newton Centre
Congratulations to the winners of the 3rd Annual Energy Conservation Student Art & Essay Contest, open to Newton students, either living or attending school in Newton! Mayor David Cohen presented the awards on April 29, and recognized each of the nearly 150 students who entered essays and artwork in this year�s contest.
First Place Winners - Essay Contest: Michele Abercrombie, Newton South; Leah Abercrombie, Oak Hill Middle School; Rebecca Lozinsky, Franklin Elementary School.

Help make Newton a bicycle-safe city and bring your friends and family! The rally will feature speaker Nicole Freedman, City of Boston Bicycle Coordinator, who is transforming Boston into a bicycle-friendly city. There will be free bike services, healthy snacks, rides on the amazing �Conference Bike�, and free raffles. The 3.5-mile Friends and Family Ride will traverse a lovely part of West Newton. Join the Green Decade and the Newton Needham Chamber of Commerce for the second annual expo and luncheon for residents and businesses in Greater Boston. This event will showcase green practices and provide many ideas for greening your house, business and community. The exhibits and workshops are free, open to the public and will run from 10:30am to 3:30pm. The luncheon will feature keynote speaker Jim Gordon, President of Cape Wind. David Cash, Assistant Secretary for Policy, Mass. Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs will present the latest information on grants, and tax incentives for energy projects. The next generation of Environmental Activists is living right here in Newton! The May program will feature Newton students from elementary, middle and high schools, showcasing their environmental projects which have been school and community focused.
Join us for this delightful look at:
� an outdoor classroom project in the woods at Countryside Elementary � the Business Recycling Project coordinated by Students for A Greener World in three Newton villages for NewtonSERVES 2008 and 2009 � an independent high school project analyzing the waste/trash collected from the Charles River over the past year � other ways that our next generation is learning -- and teaching us -- to make a greener Newton and improve the environment for us all.
As always, tea will be served. Please bring your own mugs! All ESS events are held at the Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium, at 7 pm, usually on the 3rd Monday of the month, January through June. | 5. GREEN DECADE�S NEW OFFICE AT NEWTON CULTURAL CENTER |

The Green Decade has a sunny new office in the Newton Cultural Center as of May 1! Thanks to our volunteers, Linda Plaut, director of the Mayor�s Office of Cultural Affairs, and the Newton Buildings Department, our new space will also welcome Green Decade members, friends, and visitors who stop by for information and events or to help out with GD/N projects. We are still getting things in place, and could use another 2-drawer file cabinet if anyone would like to donate one -- we have grown in 19 years!
Hours of operation will be posted on our voice mail, web site, and the door of our office on the first floor of the Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street, Newtonville. If you are interested in volunteering at our new office for a few hours a week (or month), please e-mail Margaret Ford, outreach and program coordinator, at contact@greendecade.org or call 617-964-0606.
The Newton Cultural Center (formerly Carr Elementary School) is also home to the Newton Pride Committee, Suzuki School of Newton, New Philharmonia, Warm Lines and other organizations. Classes, activities and programs are hosted at the center throughout the week.

| 8. ORGANIC GARDEN TOUR - FALL 2009: NOMINATIONS PLEASE! |
Calling All Organic Gardeners! Are you dedicated to gardening sustainably? Do you like to share with others the wonders of the garden?
The Green Decade�s Organic Gardening & Landscape Committee is seeking candidates for the 2009 Newton Organic Garden Tour, to be held in mid-September. The tour will emphasize working gardens that are maintained organically, with hosts who are interested in sharing their experience and expertise. We are interested in showcasing flower and vegetable gardens, rain and drought-tolerant gardens and lawns, as well as sustainable gardening techniques such as composting and intensive planting.
Please consider opening your garden for a day and inspiring others to garden sustainably. Both professionals and home gardeners are encouraged to apply. Nominations may be submitted to Sunwoo Kahng at organicgarden@greendecade.org. |
