Save Tuesday, June 8  for this gala event and support Green Decade's 20th Anniversary Celebration  with a donation to our silent auction!  Auction items include:

�    A week or weekend in your vacation home
�    Tickets to theatre or sporting events
�    Sports memorabilia
�    Child or pet sitting services
�    Professional services/lessons
�    Meals to go (e.g. brunch for 4,6�)

2. NEWTON �UNPLUGGED AND CONNECTED� EVENTS
Green Decade is working with Newton Community Service Center's Child Assault Prevention program to host a series of events for children and parents during the month of March.  Four events will be held, partnering with the Newton Free Library, the Newton/Angino Community Farm, Newton Civic Pride, Newton Cultural Center and Bike Newton.  All are free, but pre-registration is required for the Magic Recycled Box Workshop. More info about each is on our Upcoming Events page.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER SERIES:  " WINTER MOTH:  A NEW INVASION OF NEW ENGLAND� with DR. JOE ELKINTON

Co-sponsored by Green Decade/Newton, the Newton Free Library, Newton Tree Conservancy, Newton Conservators, Newton Community Farm and the Friends of Hemlock Gorge

Dr. Joe Elkinton of the UMASS (Amherst) Entomology Department will describe how he has enlisted Mother Nature and the state to control Winter Moth, a new invasive pest of New England trees. Professor Elkinton has been working on non-toxic control measures of this forest pest since 2005. This coming spring is predicted to be a severe defoliation year, so he will also describe ways to protect our ornamental trees in the meanwhile.  Additional details are available on the Newton Free Library's listing for this event.

March is also Newton�s 14th Annual Alternatives to Pesticides Month � check out the Green Decade�s exhibit at the Newton Free Library, first floor display cases.  The Winter Moth is featured in one case, with the other two illustrating Organic Gardening & Landscaping for children and adults � ladybugs and grasshoppers included!

4. ENVIRONMENTAL ART CONTEST: DEADLINE MARCH 15th
Open to all Newton Students in Grades K-5
Artwork Entries Due:  Monday, March 15
Awards Program:  Thursday, April 8 at 6:30 pm
War Memorial Auditorium at City Hall

This year's Environmental Art Contest  is underway with the focus on how students are helping their schools and Newton "go green."  Open to all students K-5 who live or attend school in Newton -- contest details are on our website and students should register on-line to participate in this year's contest.  Contestants can submit their entries at special designated Art Contest Collection Boxes at many of the elementary schools, the Mayor's Office at Newton City Hall, New Art Center in Newtonville, Newton Community Service Center, or the Green Decade office at the Newton Cultural Center. (All boxes will be collected by the contest committee on Tuesday, March 16.)  Questions:  617-965-1995 or EnviroArtContest@greendecade.org.

Mayor Setti Warren will present awards to the winners and certificates to all participants at this year's awards ceremony.  All contest artwork will be displayed at the April 12 Environmental Speaker Series event and at Newton City Hall's main rotunda, from April 26 to May 7.

EnviroJAM: ROCK TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT!

EnviroJAM is a musical event sponsored by the Environmental Club of Newton North High School, featuring acts by students and teachers. All proceeds will be donated to the Green Decade -- donations from the 2008 and 2009 concerts were matched by contributions from Mass Energy and others to raise over $6,500 for solar panels on Newton schools. The Green Decade will be there with information, representatives and the Magic Energy Bike.  This event is CARBON NEUTRAL!

On Earth Day, April 22, both Whole Foods Markets in Newton will be offering a Round-Up Day when customers will be asked if they would like to round up their sale to the next dollar or higher as a donation to Green Decade. Customers who shop there on April 22 will also be given the chance to be entered to win a Whole Foods �green� gift basket if they make at least a $2 donation to Green Decade.

NewtonSERVES: Community Recycling Projects
Sunday, April 25  9 am - 3pm
Join the Green Decade and the Students for a Greener World for two -- maybe three! -- Recycling Projects as part of Newton�s 10th Annual NewtonSERVES Day of Community Service.

MANAGING FRUIT TREES IN THE EDIBLE LANDSCAPE

Tour guide, Nick Novic of Small  Planet Landscaping, will take you to visit a small orchard and learn the ecological care of fruit trees using a holistic approach. By changing the way we think about "pest control" and utilizing innovative approaches along with improved materials, good results are now possible without the use of environmentally damaging chemicals.  You'll also visit a home orchard in Concord to discuss care throughout the year, including pruning, spray materials and timing, and discuss other, practical considerations. WALTHAM LAND TRUST: 1st DAY OF SPRING WALK

David Kehs, a member of the Waltham Land Trust's Board of Directors and its Land Committee, will lead this walk. The group will explore Lot 1 which is one of Waltham's newly acquired open spaces.  The walk will last about 2 hours.  Be sure to dress for the weather.  Wear sturdy shoes! If the weather has been rainy, boots may be more appropriate.  Don't forget your water bottle. Watch www.walthamlandtrust.org for an update on the trail conditions and more details on the walk.

�Newton's Only Working Farm: The Historic Newton Angino Community Farm and Sustainable Local Food,� with Ted Chapman

Join Ted Chapman for this insightful talk on the former Angino family farm.
