1. HOME BUILDERS WASTE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR: DUMP THAT DUMPSTER! This weekend!

Contractors and builders are invited to this seminar on how to reduce the waste stream from the residential construction sites as well as how to make their material handling more efficient. The goal is to reduce the need for the 30-yard omnipresent dumpster and reduce the cost of disposal. The seminar is presented by Jay Walter AIA, local architect and founder of the Sustainable Waste Management Collaborative. The workshop will be held at The Newton History Museum at the Jackson Homestead (527 Washington St., Newton); proceeds will go to the Green Decade and the Newton Historical Society. | 2. MARCH ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER SERIES: "A SENSE OF WONDER" |
A film celebrating the works of Rachel Carson Monday, March 16, 7:00 pm Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium Co-sponsored by the Green Decade, League of Women Voters and the Newton Free Library
This March, the National Women's History Project will honor women leaders of the environmental movement, and they will celebrate in particular the work of Rachel Carson. In conjunction with the effort to raise awareness about Carson�s enduring legacy of environmental stewardship, this month�s Environmental Speaker Series presents a screening of �A Sense of Wonder. � Dianne Dumanoski will lead the discussion on Rachel Carson following the film. March is Newton�s 13th Annual Alternatives to Pesticides Month! Don�t miss our exhibit in two first floor display cases at the Newton Free Library, one highlighting Rachel Carson and the other featuring Organic Gardening.

3. NEWTON "UNPLUGGED AND CONNECTED" MONTH WITH THE GREEN DECADE NEWTON: FOUR FUN EVENTS FOR KIDS AND PARENTS

Unplugged and Connected returns to Newton in March with the Newton Community Service Center and a host of organizations and activities across our city. Each year, the NCSC coordinates a calendar of activities and events, reminding us there is more to life than what is on the other side of a plug! Green Decade is co-sponsoring four of this month's events with other organizations:
Thursday, March 19 at the Newton Free Library Co-sponsored with the Newton Free Library 1."Going Green" Storytime at 3:30 pm Newton Free Library, Children's Room Children will listen to fun stories about caring for our planet, as part of the 2009 Newton Unplugged celebration! Ages 4-5.
2. Magic Recycled Box Workshop at 4:00 pm Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium What can you make from a box? A fort, a train, a robot? Bring your imagination and your friends and see what you can create from recycled materials. Ages 4 and up. Students for a Greener World will be helping younger children at this workshop.
Friday, March 20 at the Newton Cultural Center 3. Spring in Your Backyard at 3:30 pm Newton Cultural Center, 225 Nevada Street, Newtonville Celebrate Spring with us in the Art Room by planting seedlings, making a bird feeder from pine cones and a birdhouse from recycled wood!. Ages 5 and up. Co-sponsored with the Newton Community Farm and the Newton Pride Committee.
Saturday, March 21 at Newton City Hall 4. Bike Tune-up for Kids from 10:00am - 2:00pm. War Memorial Triangle, Newton City Hall Bike Newton will provide free bike tune-ups to kids, while teaching them how to do their own tune-ups. Co-sponsored by Bike Newton and the Green Decade.

| 4. 3rd ANNUAL NEWTON STUDENT ENERGY ART & ESSAY CONTEST: ENTRIES DUE MARCH 20! |
The Annual Energy Conservation Art & Essay Contest
is back for 2009, officially announced at the Mayor David Cohen's
press conference on February 2. All Newton students grades 3-12,
living or attending school in Newton, are eligible to enter either or
both contests. Key dates to remember:
- March 20: All art and essay entries due
- April 29: Awards Ceremony at War Memorial Auditorium, City Hall
This
year's contest coordinators are Angelina Zhou (Newton North 2009) for
the Art Contest, Jason Kuo (Newton South 2009) for the Essay Contest
and Amanda Frank Webber, Fundraising. Thanks also to the Schools
Outreach Committee, the Newton Schools and the Newton PTO Council for
helping coordinate the 2009 contest as well!

| 5. HOME ENERGY SAVING ECOTEAMS - COMMUNITY MEETING |
Sunday, March 29, 1:30 � 3 :00 pm Grace Church 76 Eldredge St., Newton Corner
Join us for a community-wide meeting to reduce home energy usage in Newton through EcoTeams. Green Decade is partnering with other local groups in Newton as part of the Cool Mass Campaign, sponsored by the Massachusetts Climate Action Network. Information will be provided about how easy it is to form and lead an EcoTeam made up of friends, neighbors and members of Newton's religious communities. EcoTeams meet a total of 4 times and use the step-by-step Low Carbon Diet workbook, available from Green Decade at a discounted price. There are no additional fees. The goal is to form hundreds of EcoTeams to put our community in the forefront of a Green Century.

His design practice incorporates basic climatic elements and natural materials in order to achieve significant energy savings that contribute to a more sustainable environment.
