In addition, the final program of this year's Environmental Speaker Series shows how easy and profitable it is to care about the Earth. Newton's 30 EcoTeams are currently working to reduce the CO2 output from their appliances, automobiles and houses and EcoTeam project co-chairs Jay Walter, Bonnie Glickman will host a panel of successful EcoTeam participants sharing how they implemented simple changes that saved money and reduced their CO2 emissions. In the short span of one month many have achieved savings of more than the expected 5,000 pounds. One household saved $1,000 on electricity alone in one year! EcoTeams provide an opportunity to have fun while getting to know your neighbors as you pursue a common goal.

6. FILM SCREENING: BLUEPRINT AMERICA - BEYOND THE MOTOR CITY

Blueprint America: Beyond the Motor City, the PBS documentary that aired nationally in February 2010, examines how Detroit, a symbol of America's diminishing status in the world, may come to represent the future of transportation and progress nationwide. The film will be followed by a Q and A session facilitated by Bike Newton's president, Lois Levin.
Beyond the Motor City shows how Detroit's physical layout, population growth and economic development evolved. The film ultimately takes viewers beyond Detroit's blighted urban landscape to Washington, D.C., where Congress will soon decide whether to finally push America's transportation system into the 21st century.

7. "GO GREEN@YOUR LIBRARY" SUMMER READING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN |
Kickoff program: "Riot in the Garden" with Storyteller Jackson Gilman Friday, June 25, 10:30 am Newton Free Library Registration begins Tuesday, June 22
"Go Green @ Your Library" is the Newton Free Library's 2010 summer reading program for children preschool through grade 6 with programs, reading lists and activities about the environment. This summer's program begins on Friday, June 25 at 10:30 am when storyteller Jackson Gilman will perform "Riot in the Garden" -- fun and funny stories with an environmental theme.
Also, check out the library's new reading for charity program, Readers Reach Out. For every five hours read, children will earn one "greenbuck" toward the library's goal of $100 "greenbucks", and the library will donate the money earned to Green Decade/Newton to help keep our city green! Participants keep track of their reading and write their own book reviews all summer, with the online log at www.readsinma.org/newton. Newton's urban forest is a broad and diverse resource that touches many lives. Early on in our history the city's trees were valued and cared for as a priority of the local government. This program will provide a glimpse at how Newton built and managed its urban forest, and how its managers became pioneers in the industry. The future holds many challenges for The Garden City's trees; new and innovative approaches are being explored to meet those challenges. Join Newton's own city arborist Marc Welch for a candid look at our urban forest and what the future holds for this precious resource.
