The Green Decade/Newton announces the winners of the 2009 Environmental Leadership  Awards:
�    Individual Leadership Award:  Mayor David B. Cohen for his outstanding contribution to making an environmental difference
�    Business Leadership Award: Unidine for their commitment to fresh food and a sustainable food service program.
�    Organization:  The Silent Spring Institute, whose actions positively impact the health of our planet and our communities.

The awards will be followed by a presentation on Socially Responsible Investing, given by three well-known panelists with years of experience in this field:
�    Peter D. Kinder, President of KLD Research & Analytics.  
�    Larisa Ruoff, Director of Shareholder Advocacy, Green Century Capital Management, Inc.
�    Eric Packer, Branch Manager/Senior Broker at Progressive Asset Management, the Socially Responsible Investing division of FWG.

4.  GREEN DECADE�S NEW OFFICE AT NEWTON CULTURAL CENTER

The Green Decade has a sunny new office in the Newton Cultural Center as of May 1 and we look forward to opening it to our members and the public this summer with the assistance of our volunteers! We tentatively plan to open it Monday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons and are looking for volunteers -- all ages -- to help meet and greet visitors or to work on Green Decade projects and events.  If you are interested, please e-mail  Margaret Ford, Outreach and Program Coordinator, at contact@greendecade.org or call 617-964-0606. 

The Newton Cultural Center (formerly Carr Elementary School) is also home to the Suzuki School of Newton, New Philharmonia Orchestra, WarmLines. Mothers' Milk Bank of New England, Newton Child Card Commission and Fund,
Newton Pride Committee and the Mayor's Office of Cultural Affairs.  Classes, activities and programs are hosted at the center throughout the week.

6. NEWTON FARMERS MARKET BEGINS IN JULY!
Tuesdays 1:30-6 pm at Cold Spring Park, Beacon St. (Starts July 7)
Fridays 1:30-6 pm at Post 440, California St., Nonantum (Starts July 10)
Sponsored by the Newton Parks & Recreation Department

Join us for another great season at the 30th Newton Farmers Market! The Green Decade will have our information and resource table under the red tent at both locations -- volunteers of all ages are welcome to join us, as always.  This year we will also feature our popular "Magic Energy Bike" which demonstrates the difference in energy required to light up the old light bulbs vs the energy-efficient CFL bulbs.  The giant caterpillars will be back, along with the Green Caterpillar Club activity for our young friends under 10!  Our friends from the Newton Angino Community Farm will also be at both markets this year, so stop by and see us both.

The Newton Farmers Markets are held twice weekly from July through October.  If you'd like to volunteer for a couple of hours at either location, please contact Margaret Ford, Community Outreach Coordinator, at mford@greendecade.org or 617-964-0606.

7. ORGANIC GARDEN TOUR - FALL 2009:  NOMINATIONS PLEASE!
The Green Decade�s Organic Gardening & Landscape Committee is seeking candidates for the 2009 Newton Organic Garden Tour, to be held in mid-September. The tour will emphasize working gardens that are maintained organically, with hosts who are  interested in sharing their experience and expertise.  We are interested in showcasing flower and vegetable gardens, rain and drought-tolerant gardens and lawns, as well as sustainable gardening techniques such as composting and intensive planting.

Whether you are professional or a home gardener, please consider opening your garden for a day and inspiring others to garden sustainably!    Please submit nominations by June 20 to  Sunwoo Kahng at  organicgarden@greendecade.org.

Cutler/Millennium Park Hike

Starting at Cutler Park, we will explore a wide variety of trails, river landings and recreational areas on this 5.5 mile hike.  Meet at the Cutler Park entrance, a quarter mile south of the Charles River Bridge on Kendrick Street in Needham. Trip Leader is Henry Finch (617-964-4488).

CHARLES RIVER WATERSHED ASSOCIATION (CRWA) INVASIVE PLANT PULLS
June 22 � August 9
Volunteering to Remove Invasive Plants from the Charles River 
From June 22 through August 9, CRWA will be organizing volunteers to go out in canoes and pull invasive water chestnuts from the river in Newton. If you would like to organize a group (of 15 � 60 people) from your workplace, neighborhood, club, or place of worship, CRWA can schedule a personalized time for your group to volunteer. INTRODUCTION TO HOME ENERGY SAVINGS

Massachusetts homes could save 20% or more on their fuel use -- learn what you can do at this Introduction to Home Energy Savings seminar. The program is one of 130 such programs, sponsored by the Massachusetts Municipal Association, that are being held statewide.

The workshop will stress the importance of reducing heat usage by providing do-it-yourself sealing techniques; information on which in-depth alterations are most cost effective; tips on reducing electricity and water usage, resources for home audits and resources for rebates and financing alterations. Presenters will illustrate hands-on tips, indicate which actions are most cost effective and provide free educational materials for everyone attending. Refreshments provided by Whole Foods on Walnut St. in Newton.
