1. GDC’S ANNUAL PLANT & GARDEN SALE.

Sale: Saturday, June 9, 10 am- 1 pm Plant donations: By Wednesday, June 6, please 87 Derby Street, W. Newton Home of landscape designer and organic gardener Betsy Leavitt
Spring is here and our Annual Plant & Garden Sale is coming up -- with great prices and free garden/ landscape consulting! Please donate your plants for this annual event -- annuals, perennials, ground cover, vines, seeds, tree & shrub seedlings, and decorative items such as flower pots or baskets.
Please drop off donations by Wednesday, June 6 at 87 Derby Street, W. Newton (corner of Cherry and Derby Streets). Place plants on the left side of the driveway (it is a shared drive). Tables will be set up to receive your donations. All plant donations must be labeled but do not have be in containers. Volunteers are also needed. 2. NEWTON HIGHLANDS VILLAGE DAY: Sunday, June 10, 12-5 pm

| This annual festival features activities such as a bicycle parade, foot race, bake contest, live music, plus street vendors selling crafts and food. The Green Decade is always part of this event and we’ll have our raffle tickets for sale -- join our volunteers at the GDC information and resource table! 3. ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS

Each year, the Green Decade presents these awards go to an individual for his/her outstanding contribution to making an environmental difference and to a group who has done much to foster environmental awareness/activism. In 2005, a business award was added to recognize those whose actions positively impact the health of our planet and local communities. The 2006 awards were presented to NNHS science teachers Ann Dannenberg and Zach Snow, the Newton Conservators and Wainwright Bank.
Please submit your nominations for this year’s awards by June 10 to Peter Smith at psmith@icg.org. Nominees should live or work in Newton and have made a significant contribution to the environment and the Newton community. Please provide specific information about the nominee and the environmental contribution. More information and photos of the 2006, 2005 and 2004 award winners are on our website. |

4. ANNUAL MEETING AND AWARDS: “NEWTON’S STUDENTS SHOW US HOW”

The Green Decade will present their Annual Environmental Leadership Awards to a Newton individual, an organization and a business who have made an outstanding contribution to the environment. The event will also include presentations by Newton school students on what they are learning and doing to become environmentally aware global citizens. The Annual Meeting will also be held, including elections of GDC officers and board members. GDC members are invited to submit nominations for officers or board members by June 15 to contact@greendecade.org. All ESS events are held at the Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium, at 7 pm, usually on the 3rd Monday of the month, January through June. June’s Environmental Show features Part 2 of "Newton's Alien Plant Invasion", and is based on last November's lecture at the Newton Free Library by well-known author and naturalist Peter Alden of Concord, MA. (Part 1 was shown in April 2007.) His presentation gives a stunning display of the twenty worst invasive alien plants in the Newton area. You will come away from the presentation with the knowledge of how to recognize these plants and what some of the control options are. In addition you will learn what is happening at the state level and in the legislature in how to deal with severe menace to our city's biodiversity.

| 6. ECO TEAMS FORMING FOR SUMMER & FALL 2007 |
| The Green Decade is forming EcoTeams to begin this summer and fall. Household EcoTeams help help participants to reduce their energy use, garbage , water use, and toxic products. In the process, team members save money on their utility bills. Teams of 5 to 8 meet seven times, about every three weeks, and are guided by a Global Action Plan workbook and a coach. The Green Decade is holding a raffle to raise funds for our expanding programs. Top prizes include a bicycle from Harris Cycles, a $300 gift certificate from Whole Foods and a month of free lawn mowing from Clean Air Lawn Care. Tickets are $10 or 3 for $20. ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY CAR WASH Saturday, June 2, 2007 11:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Mason Rice School Pleasant Street Newton Centre
Come to the 5th Grade Car Wash at the Mason Rice School. $6 per car. Refreshments will be sold. Rain date is Sunday June 3rd. The goal is to have the car wash have a Green flovor, so the soap has been donated by Sun and Earth, www.sunandearth.com. They are donating $100 to the Green Decade Coalition and $1 of every $4 to the New England Wind Fund.
