1. COOL MASS CAMPAIGN & NEWTON ECOTEAMS |
"Cool Mass" is a ground-breaking new program that brings the strength and determination of Massachusetts residents to the fight against global warming. It enables households across the Commonwealth to act boldly to reduce their carbon footprints, by forming EcoTeams in their communities. Newton is one of the first 11 communities to join the Cool Mass Campaign, along with Boston, Brookline, Dedham, Milton, Newton, Braintree, Cohasset, Hingham, Hull, Plymouth, and Winchester. MCAN (Massachusetts Climate Action Network) and Empowerment Institute will be working with representatives from all these communities over the next three years to enable them to reduce carbon footprints by 25% in up to 85% of households.
Find out more or join a Newton EcoTeam! Contact co-chairs Bonnie Glickman at bglickman@mindspring.com or Jay Walter at Entasis@rcn.com.

Build a Bluebird House Newton Community Farm Educational Series Saturday, July 18 2:00-4:00 pm Help bring back bluebirds to the farm! The bluebird is very beneficial to us, eating large quantities of insects, such as cutworms and grasshoppers, considered damaging to our crops and gardens. These beautiful birds were once very common in the United States. However, over the last century their numbers have diminished due to loss of natural habitat, overuse of pesticides and predators. Tom Libby, Newton Community Farms assistant farmer, will lead adult-child pairs to constructing birdhouses. The bluebirds will nest and raise their families in the houses returning to the farm for years to come. Your first creation will be installed at the Farm. You will go home with directions and all the materials needed to make a second bluebird house for your own yard!. Visit www.newtoncommunityfarm.org/NCFSummerCourses09.pdf for registration and fee details.
