1. 2007 ANNUAL ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP AWARDS
Each  year, the Green Decade presents these awards to an individual for  his/her outstanding contribution to making an environmental difference  and to a group who has done much to foster environmental  awareness/activism.  Congratulations to the winners of the 2007 Annual Environmental Leadership Awards presented on June 25 at the Newton Free Library, along with the June Environmental Speaker Series and the Annual Meeting & Elections.

Award to an individual:   Sally Rosen, Advisor to the Newton South High School Environment Club.  Under Sally’s guidance the club is leading the way in increasing recycling programs to benefit projects locally and overseas.   She has also guided the club through sponsoring Newton South's  “Earth Day” the past 2 years and the new landscaping program, planting native  species around the high school.

Award to a group:   Angino Farm
.  With their mission to preserve and improve this historic open space site for the benefit of the community, the Angino Farm now provides local, sustainably grown produce, and educates the public about environmental practices, sustainable use of land and other natural resources.  A portion of the food grown on site is donated to people in need through the Newton Food Pantry.

Award to a business:  Cambridge Savings Bank,
the first bank in the nation to be recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as an Energy Star Leader.  Cambridge Savings has instituted an aggressive plan of energy reduction, use of alternatives such as solar panels, geothermal, and a paper use/reduce program. Their goal:  all of their branch offices will attain Energy Star designation.

Special recognition:
Fran Seasholes, Urban Ark Coordinator
Betsy Leavitt,   Annual Plant & Garden Sale Coordinator

Photos and additional details will soon be available on the Green Decade website's Environmental Awards page.

4.  NEWTON FARMERS MARKETS: TUESDAYS & FRIDAYS 1:30-6 pm

Tuesdays 1:30-6 pm at Cold Spring Park, Beacon St.
Fridays 1:30-6 pm at Post 440, California St., Nonantum
Sponsored by the Newton Parks & Recreation Department

Join us for another great season at the 28th Newton Farmers Market! The Green Decade will have our information and resource table under the red tent at both locations -- volunteers of all ages are welcome to join us, as always.  This year we will also feature the popular "Energy Bike" which demonstrates the difference in energy required to light up the old light bulbs vs the energy-efficient CFL bulbs.  Our friends from the Angino Farm will also be at both markets this year, so stop by and see us both!

The Newton Farmers Markets are held weekly from July through October.  If you'd like to volunteer for a couple of hours at either location, please contact Margaret Ford, Community Outreach Coordinator, at margford@yahoo.com or 617-964-0606.
