CRWA�s Bob Zimmerman will kick off the 2009 Environmental Speaker Series with a talk on EPA and DEP�s new stormwater rules for the Charles watershed, which were recently in the Globe and on WBUR. With Zimmerman as Executive Director for 18 years, the CRWA been central to virtually every major environmental decision, not just on the Charles, but statewide and regionally. He has been a member of the MA Water Resources Commission for 17 years, and serves on a number of other regional environmental boards.

2. COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT ON ENERGY USE REDUCTION

Inspired by president-elect Obama�s message of community service, the Green Decade is partnering with other local groups on an important community-wide service project to bring Newton residents together to reduce home energy usage and help residents save on energy bills. Come learn about the EcoTeam program to be launched on or around Earth Day 2009! Groups of friends and neighbors will meet four times in small teams to work together on a step-by-step plan to reduce household energy use and place our city at the forefront of energy efficiency. Learn more about the EcoTeam concept and our two new programs, Green Living Handbook and the Low Carbon Diet on our website.

3. JANUARY ENVIRONMENT SHOW: "EXTENSION OF THE GREEN LINE THROUGH UPPER FALLS TO NEEDHAM"

This month�s program is an encore presentation of the September 2007 show, which features interviews with Dr. Srdjan Nedeljkovic, physician and author of a comprehensive report on the extension of the Green Line through Newton Upper Falls into Needham, and with James O'Connell of the National Parks Service, a historian with an interest in street railways in Newton. Both guests are Newton residents and they will discuss the benefits of this extension for Newton residents and the environment. Compared to other communities, this is the most economic extension of the T anywhere, with a win-win situation for all. Among other benefits, carbon monoxide will be cut by 100 tons and carbon dioxide will be reduced by 2500 tons.

Everyone is invited for coffee and tea and innovative ideas for involving the business community to save money and protect the environment. Last year's Green Business Expo was the committee's first major event and this year's Expo is now being planned.

Hope and Change: Socially Responsible Investing and Financial Planning Under the Obama Administration Tuesday, January 20 at 7:30 pm Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium 330 Homer St., Newton Center 02459 (617) 796-1360
The seminar is for people who are interested in learning about the social, environmental and financial benefits of socially responsible investing (SRI). It will include a brief history of the field of SRI, followed by a review of current sustainable investing trends and opportunities, and impacts; including how SRI has weathered the current financial crisis. Looking at the future, and how the Obama presidency might affect SRI, participants will learn how this broad context relates to those who want their investments to reflect their values, and how they might accomplish that within the framework of a financial plan. There will be a Q & A session.
Speakers will be Christopher McIntyre, Ph.D., founder of Green Harbor Financial, Joshua Humphreys, Ph.D., founding director of the Center for Social Philanthropy and David Wood, Ph.D., Director of the Institute for Responsible Investment at the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship.
