1. A NETWORK OF GREENWAYS FOR BOSTON WITH PETER FURTH , NORTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY
|
Monday, Dec. 1, 7:00 pm Newton Free Library, Druker Auditorium 330 Homer Street, Newton, MA 02459 Free to the public Co-sponsored by GDCs Bike Newton, Bicycle Pedestrian Task Force and the Newton Free Library
Guest speaker Peter G. Furth, Ph.D., is a Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering at Northeastern University, and a member of the Brookline Transportation Board and its Bicycle Advisory Committee. This program
The city of Newton is fortunate to have a beautiful greenway extension along the Charles River on which cyclists can ride to points in Boston or Cambridge. While Boston has some lovely greenways along rivers, sea and rail corridors, they are not connected. Many people would like to bicycle more for work and for pleasure, but are hindered by the lack of safe, traffic-free routes to ride along. Boston has some lovely greenways along rivers, the sea, and rail corridors, and with the addition of some key links, Bostons greenways will form a network that will connect six times as many origin-destination pairs as the current set of greenways. This would multiply the potential for utilitarian cycling and making Boston a world-class hub for recreational cycling. Connections to be highlighted include HarborRide linking the Charlestown Bridge to Fort Point Channel; several missing links along the Emerald Necklace, including paths along the Arborway, crosstown links between the Fens and the South Boston and Dorchester beaches, and other areas.

2. " WHATS IN THE CHARLES RIVER? STUDENTS FOR A GREENER WORLD
|
Clean-up Project/Students for a Greener World Saturday, December 6, 9:00 am Cutler Park (North Entrance), Needham
Join our group of volunteers to find out Whats in the Charles River? as part of an independent AP biology project by GDCs Students for a Greener World, led by project leader Trevor Romich of Newton North. We will meet at Cutler Parks North Entrance in Needham (map and directions) at 9:00 am. Volunteers will be collecting trash from the river, sorting and classifying it for the project not unlike CSI investigators!
Project leaders will provide gloves, trash and recyclables bags, first aid and other disposal supplies. Volunteers should wear boots and weatherappropriate clothes, and bring a snack and drink. If you have a long pole with net (like a pool skimmer), please bring it. If anyone has a pickup truck or car which can transport recyclables, that would be helpful.
To volunteer or for more information on the project, please contact Trevor Romich at trevorromich@comcast.net. Additional details may be provided closer to project date, including weather contingency plans. Additional clean-up event(s) will be scheduled for spring 2009. |

| 3. DECEMBER ENVIRONMENT SHOW: RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN COLD SPRING PARK (REPRISE from DECEMBER 2004) |
Through December Host: Cris Criscitiello, Newton Conservators
"Recreational Opportunities in Cold Spring Park" explores one of Newton's most attractive open areas, with its combination of playing fields, exercise trail, walking paths, wetlands, woodsy spots, and scenic views. It is also home, in the summer, for the weekly Farmers' Market which draws hundreds of Newton shoppers in search of fresh, locally grown produce. The show features interviews and action shots of people enjoying all that the park has to offer, from the "Three Explorers," a group of youngsters who take their nature study seriously, to joggers and exercise buffs who count on the park facilities for physical fitness. You will also be treated to an intimate view of Cold Spring Park, given a bit of its history, and offered a chance to join in a walk around its trails. The Newton Conservators are seeking video interested folks (young and old) to assist with producing, editing, promoting, and maintaining their NewTV and online Environmental Show (which will be changing its hosting service this coming month).
The Environment Show is broadcast on the NewTV Blue channel (Comcast Chan. 10, RCN Chan. 15, Verizon Chan. 34): Mondays 3:00 p.m. Tuesdays 1:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Wednesdays: 11:30 a.m. Thursdays: 12:00, 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.
Videos
of previous Environment Show programs are now available for viewing
online at the GDC website. This monthly show is produced alternatively
by the Green Decade and the Newton Conservators. |
