2. AUGUST ENVIRONMENTAL SHOW:  "SAVING NEWTON'S LAST FARM" (Encore)
Through August 30
Host:  Cris Criscitiello,  Newton Conservators

Guests:  Jon Regosin,  Jay Mitchell, John Rodman, Vaunita Schnell and others

The August Environmental Show  will reprise the inaugural show from 2004.  "Saving Newton's Last Farm" describes the history and background of what is now Newton Angino Community Farm and the efforts to acquire the property under the Community Preservation Act (CPA). The show interviews those who knew Jerry Angino, who last farmed the land, as well as those involved in the effort to save the farm.  Viewers will find interesting the contrast of the farm only three years ago with its operation today under a non-profit farm group (www.newtoncommunityfarm.org ) with a full time farmer, corps of volunteers, a successful CSA operation, an operating farm stand, fresh "low mileage" produce supplied at the Newton Farmers' Markets, and an offering of educational programs.

More information about the August program is available at greendecade.org/environmentTV.
The Environment Show is broadcast on the NewTV Blue channel (Comcast Chan. 10, RCN Chan. 15, Verizon Chan. 34):
Mondays      3:00 p.m.
Tuesdays      1:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Wednesdays 11:30 a.m.
Thursdays:    12:00, 4:00 and 7:30 p.m.

Tuesdays 1:30-6 pm at Cold Spring Park, Beacon St.
Fridays 1:30-6 pm at Post 440, California St., Nonantum

Join  us for another great season at the 28th Newton Farmers Market! The  Green Decade has our information and resource table under the red  tent at both locations -- volunteers of all ages are welcome to join  us, as always.  This year we are featuring the popular "Energy  Bike" which demonstrates the difference in energy required to light up the old-style light bulbs vs the energy-efficient CFL bulbs. See the August 1 TAB (p. 21) for the photo of Mayor David Cohen on the bike, with Energy Chair Eric Olson.  We will also be showing the bicycle that will be the first prize for our raffle, beginnning this month. Our friends from the Angino Farm are also at both markets this year, so stop by to see us all!

The Newton Farmers Markets are held weekly from  July through October.  If you'd like to volunteer for a couple of hours  at either location, please contact Margaret Ford, Community Outreach  Coordinator, at margford@yahoo.com or 617-964-0606.

Join online or contact  Margaret Ford at margford@yahoo.com or 617-964-0606 for more information. Also see our website  www.greendecade.org/ecoteams.html

7.  SEPTEMBER 15:  "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"  --  SHOWING & DISCUSSION
Saturday, September 15, 1 pm
Newton Free Library, Druker Library
Co-sponsored by the Green Decade, Green Energy Newton and the Newton Free Library
FREE

Even if you’ve already seen Al Gore’s film – and especially if you haven’t – join us for this showing! GDC Energy Chair Prof. Eric Olson (Brandeis University) will lead the discussion afterwards.  In Eric's view, shared by many, Gore's 100-minute film does a good job describing the science and the politics surrounding this issue, but is less effective at describing solutions.  Eric will briefly describe ways of tackling global warming that can form a basis for your individual and political next-step actions, and he will encourage audience commentary on both the film and possible solutions.

BONUS:
We will also draw the winning tickets for the Green Decade raffle prizes after the movie showing and before the discussion.  Winners need not be present to win, but must purchase raffle tickets before 2 pm on Sept. 15.  Raffle tickets may be purchased online or by mail: contact raffle@greendecade.org or come to our Green Decade table at the Newton Farmers Markets on Tuesdays and Fridays.
