Save Tuesday, June 8  for this gala event and support Green Decade's 20th Anniversary Celebration with a donation to our silent auction!  Suggestions include:

2. ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER SERIES: "Celebrating the Earth with the Next Generation: How Our Students Help Newton Go Green"

Celebrate Earth Day with the next generation of environmentalists:  our Newton students! Our April program will showcase students' environmental projects, all of which have been school and community-focused.  Take a delightful look at conserving our natural environment through the eyes of the artists in grades K-5 from this year's Environmental Art Contest, whose artwork will be on display.

Enjoy the special presentations by our guest speakers:
  • The 5th Grade "Green Team" iMovie crew (Burr Elementary)
  • Green Day Team  (F.A. Day Middle School)
  • GreenKidzz  (Newton South High School)
  • Greengineers (Newton North High School)
  • Students for a Greener World (Green Decade)
Teach your children well, and see how they are teaching their friends, families and classmates to care about the Earth -- bring your family, too!

3. EARTH DAY:  WHOLE FOODS "ROUND UP DAY"

On Earth Day, April 22, both Whole Foods Markets in Newton will offer a "Round Up Day" when customers may round up their sale to the next dollar or higher as a donation to Green Decade. Customers will also be given the chance to be entered to win a Whole Foods "green" gift basket if they make at least a $2 donation to Green Decade.

4.  NewtonSERVES 10th ANNUAL DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE: Green Decade Projects!
Sunday, April 25 
9 am - 3pm
(Sundaes on Sunday at 3:30!)

Join volunteers all over Newton for the 10th Annual NewtonSERVES Day of Community Service!  Green Decade will have two recycling projects and mailing project -- find out more about each and register on-line at the NewtonSERVES website.  Yes -- those are our red-shirted Students for a Greener World in the top photo on the NewtonSERVES page -- with Dana Berry of the New Art Center, at last year's Business Recycling Project in Newtonville!

1.  Business Recycling Project: West Newton & Auburndale (Students for a Greener World)
 Volunteers will pick up recyclable paper & cardboard from participating businesses in both villages, to be deposited in specially designated collection bins, coordinated with the City of Newton's Environmental Affairs Department.  This is the 3rd year for this project, coordinated by the Students for a Greener World -- come join us for a great project!
    West Newton:  9:30 am-12 noon (register on-line)
    Auburndale:  12:30 - 3 pm (register on-line)

2. Mailing Project:
Help fold & label mailing pieces for Green Decade's 20th Anniversary Celebration (indoor project -- register on-line).

5.  NEWTON STUDENT ENVIRONMENTAL ART CONTEST 2010:  WINNERS!
On April 8, Mayor Setti D. Warren presented awards and certificates to over 120 students who participated in this year's Environmental Art Contest, to a packed house at City Hall's War Memorial Auditorium. This year's contest included students from 10 schools: Burr, Cabot, Countryside, Lincoln-Eliot, Mason-Rice, Memorial-Spaulding, Peirce and Zervas elementary schools, plus the Newton Community Service Center and the Suzuki School of Newton.  See the list of all winners and photos of the first place art now on our website.

6.  NEWTON ECO-TEAM PROJECT: ONLINE SURVEY with WPI
During the month of April, Green Decade is collaborating with Worcester Polytechnic Institute students with a focus on the Eco-team Project.  Please help us by participating in a short online survey to help the Eco-Team Project learn how to improve its carbon calculator and make the website more user-friendly.  More information: NewtonEcoTeams.org.

MASS SAVE GREAT APPLIANCE EXCHANGE

The Mass Save Great Appliance Exchange is offering incentives on highly efficient clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, and freezers when you replace an existing appliance. These rebates are available for a limited time only, starting Earth Day, April 22 through May 5, 2010. Reservations must be placed and appliances must be purchased during this time. All Massachusetts households, including those of municipal electric utility customers, are eligible for these rebates. More information:  MassSave.

11th ANNUAL EARTH DAY CLEAN-UP AT HEMLOCK GORGE
Saturday, April 24, 10am-Noon
Join the MA Department of Conservation and Recreation, the Friends of the Hemlock Gorge Reservation and more than 3.000 other volunteers along all 80 miles of the Charles River in the 11th Annual Earth Day Cleanup.  Materials and tools supplied.  Lunch provided after the clean-up for the Hemlock Gorge Reservation volunteers.  Please dress appropriately for the work and the weather (rain or shine).  Meet up at 10 am at the parking lot at Hamilton Place, off Elliott Street. Additional parking available at the Mills Falls complex.

WPI's student research team has spent the semester assessing current pedestrian conditions, interviewing residents on walking and reviewing best practices in pedestrian design. Don't miss this presentation of recommended improvementswith maps highlighting these suggestions will be followed by a questionand answer session with the audience.
