1. CASH IN THE TRASH II:  RESULTS FROM THE AUTOMATED TRASH & SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING TRIALS

This follow-up forum will look at how the automated trash pick-up and single stream recycling trial has worked in Newton, along with the Citizen Advisory Group�s proposal to move the City beyond automated trash collection to a Pay As You Throw trash program.

 Speakers include:
�    Tom Daley, Newton�s new Commissioner of the Department of Public Works.  He will describe results from Newton�s pilot program for single-stream recycling and automated trash pick-up. He will also discuss future plans for the city�s trash program.
�    Kevin Dutt from Newton�s Citizen Advisory Group.  He will discuss the fiscal benefits associated with the CAG�s proposal for a Pay as You Throw Trash program in Newton.
�    Brooke Lipsitt, former president of the Board of Aldermen, who will moderate the Q & A period at the end of the evening.

2. GREEN BUILDING BUSINESS WORKSHOP

The goal of this workshop is to educate local business owners on ways to reduce energy costs, improve indoor air quality, support renewable energy including solar and wind power, and generally �go green� with proven technologies and practices. The workshop will focus on the interests and questions of local business owners who have been searching for cost-effective ways to make their operations greener.

3.  NEWTONSERVES DAY OF COMMUNITY SERVICE

Join Green Decade and other volunteers for our NewtonSERVES environmental project(s), among more than 50 projects all over the City of Newton on this Annual Day of Community Service. Our two main projects:

Business Recycling Project in Newton Highlands and Newtonville: Students for a Greener World (SGW) is inviting businesses in these two villages to participate in a one-day pick-up of recyclable paper and cardboard. Volunteers will go to participating businesses to pick up the recyclables. Please bring wagons, carts, wheelbarrows, etc., to help carry it to the collection site.  The City will provide a dumpster at the site, then transport it to the Rumford Avenue Recycling Depot. SGW�s goal is for the City's new recycling contract to include businesses, non-profits, religious organizations, etc. (Ages 11-up).

EcoTeams: Learn how to lead Eco-Teams to reduce home energy use! We are partnering with other local groups in Newton as part of a program called the Cool Mass Campaign. The guide is the step-by-step Low Carbon Diet workbook, an excellent resource offering practical solutions to help evaluate your home energy usage and implement strategies to become more energy efficient and save money. Green Decade provides the workbook at a discounted price of $12. (Ages 11-up).

4. APRIL ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER SERIES:  �ORGANIC GARDENING 101: SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES�

Co-sponsored by the Green Decade/Newton, Newton Department of Public Works and the Newton Free Library

Three professional landscapers will be our guest panelists, sharing information on organic gardening practices, providing step-by-step guidelines for the home gardener, and more!

�    Ted Chapman, certified landscape designer and organic land care professional with over 35 years of experience, will talk about what healthy, living soil means.
�    Risa Edelstein, landscape designer, will address how water can be harvested and used in a sustainable landscape and demonstrate ways to conserve water using smart irrigation methods. She is a certified MA Arborist and accredited with NOFA as an organic land care professional.
�    Henrietta Light will speak on pest management in the home garden using organic methods. A former horticulturist at the Lyman Estate in Waltham, she is now a garden consultant and designer.

Moderator for the Q & A session at the end of the evening will be Margaret Ford of GD/N�s Organic Gardening & Landscape Committee.

5.  3rd ANNUAL NEWTON STUDENT ENERGY ART & ESSAY CONTEST AWARDS

Come celebrate all of the contestants in the 3rd Annual Energy Conservation Art & Essay Contest, open to all Newton students grades 3-12,living orattending school in Newton.  Mayor David Cohen and our sponsors will be on hand to present awards and to recognize nearly 150 students who entered essays and artwork in this year�s contest.

Artwork from the contest will be displayed in the rotunda of City Hall from May 1-15.  Details of the 3rd Annual Energy Conservation Contest are available on our website, along with photos of last year's awards and winning art and essays.

This year's contest is co-sponsored by the Green Decade, Newton Schools Foundation, Green Energy Newton, NSTAR, Chapman Construction/Design, SUEZ Energy Resources , Boston Green Building, Byggmeister Design Build, Swartz True Value Hardware and other organizations. 10TH ANNUAL EARTH DAY CHARLES RIVER CLEANUP

Come join more than 2,200 other volunteers along all 80 miles of the Charles River in the 10th Annual Cleanup on Saturday, April 25! You will be part of a group picking up trash (including shopping carts, plastic bottles, and old tires) from along the banks of the Charles River at one of 40 sites from Boston to Bellingham. CRWA will provide participants with gloves, trash bags, and a free t-shirt for, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing you�ve helped improve the health and beauty of the Charles River!
