| 1. NewtonSERVES 2008 -- GREEN DECADE’S ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS! |
Sunday, April 13 9 am-3 pm for projects 3:30 pm Sundaes on Sunday! Newton City Hall 1000 Commonwealth Avenue
Join Green Decade and other volunteers in one or more of our three NewtonSERVES environmental projects, among the 55 projects all over the city of Newton on this Annual Day of Community Service.
• Enviro-Quilt 2008: volunteers are asked to bring colored (recycle) paper which is blank on one side for writing environmental tips, fun facts or drawings, to be joined into a large recycled paper quilt with recycled twist ties! We plan to display the quilt at City Hall and the Energy Contest Award Ceremony, among other sites. (Ages 8 and up, indoors)
• Newton Centre Business Recycling Project: Students for a Greener World (SGW) is inviting Newton Centre businesses to participate in a one-day pick-up of recyclable paper and cardboard. Volunteers will go to participating businesses to pick up the recyclables. Please bring wagons, carts, wheelbarrows, etc., to help carry it to the collection site. The City will provide a dumpster at the site, then transport it to the Rumford Avenue Recycling Depot. SGW is managing this event with the hope that the City's new recycling contract will include businesses, non-profits, religious organizations, etc. (Ages 11-up).
• Newton's 5th Annual Trade and Recycle Day: Swap 'til you drop! Back by popular demand. Newton residents may bring useful but unwanted belongings for swapping, donating, recycling or reusing. Bring your stuff or just come pick up something for free. Please visit www.ci.newton.ma.us/dpw/recycling for a list of acceptable items. 2. NEWTON CENTRE SMALL BUSINESS ENERGY INITIATIVE

Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 6 pm Coldwell Banker Office 1261Centre Street, Newton Centre
The Green Decade Coalition, in partnership with the City of Newton, is reaching out to Newton Centre Businesses to share information on how to take advantage of valuable financial incentives available from NSTAR. Business owners & managers will learn how the program works and how they can reduce your energy bills right along with their carbon footprint. Participants are invited to sign up for a free Energy Audit with emphasis on lighting, a very simple way to demonstrate to customers the business owner’s commitment to the environment. A display banner in Newton Centre Village, as well as local media coverage, will give special recognition to participants in the program.

3. ENVIRONMENTAL SPEAKER SERIES: " BACK TO THE FARM: WHAT COMMUNITY FARMS DO FOR US" WITH GREG MASLOWE AND GREY LEE

Monday April 28, 7- 9 pm Free Druker Auditorium, Newton Free Library 330 Homer St., Newton Centre Co-sponsored by the Green Decade Coalition/Newton, the Newton Free Library, the Newton Community Farm, the Newton Farmers Market and the Newton Conservators.
Join us for a lively evening with Greg Maslowe, Farm Manager of the Newton Community Farm and Grey Lee, Executive Director of Land’s Sake in Weston, as they address the importance of community farms in our cities and towns. The program will include:
* The role and purpose of non-profit farms operating on community owned land * Why cities and towns should support these farms * How community based non-profit farms teach sustainable agriculture, preserve open space and foster community while reconnecting people withtheir food and help build a local food economy

4. 2008 NEWTON STUDENT ENERGY ESSAY & ART CONTEST AWARDS: APRIL 30

Wednesday, April 30, 6:30 - 8:30 pm Newton City Hall, War Memorial Auditorium
The entries are in for the 2nd Annual Energy Conservation Contest, with over 120 Newton students submitting essays and artwork on the topic of energy conservation! All contestants, families, friends and GDC members are invited to join us for this event, when the awards will presented by Mayor David B. Cohen and the contest co-sponsors including the Green Decade, Newton Schools Foundation, Green Energy Newton, and NSTAR, and other organizations. First place essay contest winners will read their essays, all artwork will be displayed in the War Memorial Auditorium and refreshments will be served. 5. APRIL ENVIRONMENT SHOW: " WILD EDIBLE PLANTS, PART 2” WITH RUSS COHEN |
Throughout the month of April This is the second segment of Russ Cohen’s presentation, Part 1 of which was shown in February. Learn to eat your way through the woods with the help of professional environmentalist and wild foods enthusiast Russ Cohen. His lecture slide presentation on the Wild Edible Plants of New England, was originally presented as the Newton Conservators Fall lecture (September 2007) at the Newton Free Library. Russ Cohen is the author of "Wild Plants I Have Known ... and Eaten" published by the Essex County Greenbelt Association.
The Environment Show is broadcast on the NewTV Blue channel (Comcast Chan. 10, RCN Chan. 15, Verizon Chan. 34): Mondays 3:00 p.m. Tuesdays 1:30 a.m. and 11:30 p.m. Wednesdays: 11:30 a.m. Thursdays: 12:00, 4:00 and 7:30 p.m. Saturdays: 10:00 a.m.

6. BLOOMINGDALE’S SHOPPING BENEFIT: $4,600 RAISED FOR GREEN DECADE! |
Many thanks to our members, friends and volunteers who contributed to “the shopping benefit” at Bloomingdale’s on February 27! Over $1,000 was raised in advance ticket sales, with an additional $475 contributed by Bloomingdale’s for the 95 people who submitted their tickets at the door and qualified GDC for a $3,100 share of At-Door Ticket Sales funds. We also extend our appreciation to Bloomingdale’s for inviting the Green Decade to participate as one of the 40 charities and non-profits included in the 2008 “shopping benefit” fundraiser.

7. GREEN DECADE FUNDRAISER YARD SALE |

Fundraising Co-Chair Laura Katleman-Prue will host a fundraising yard sale, the proceeds of which will go to the Green Decade. Volunteers and donations welcome, including kitchen goods, books, appliances, paintings, sculpture, clothing, linens, lamps, furniture, jewelry, work tools, garden tools. Please drop-off your items to donate to the sale anytime on Friday, May 2, at 226 Kent Rd. 8. BIKE NEWTON RALLY & SAFETY DEMONSTRATION |
Sunday May 18, 12:30 pm Newton City Hall War Memorial Auditorium Steps Sponsored by the Green Decade Coalition/Newton Join the rally to demonstrate substantial and serious grassroots support for improved bicycle safety in Newton. The program includes a bike clinic, entertainment, food, safety instructions and merchandise, speakers and a 2.5 mile Friends and Family Ride. HEALTHY LAWNS & LANDSCAPES WORKSHOP Free Healthy Lawns and Landscapes workshops, led by Ann McGovern of the Mass. Department of Environmental Protection.
